Women's Tennis Holds Off FDU For Sixth Straight Win

NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT women's tennis team kept up its winning ways, fending off a strong in-state challenge from the FDU Knights to earn its six consecutive victory, 4-3, Friday evening at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility

Despite winning the first doubles flight, the Highlanders (7-1) would find themselves down 1-0 after FDU (1-2) won close matches at Nos. 3 and 2 to take the first points. Straight set wins by Shalom Salvi and Laura Wipfli gave NJIT a 2-1 overall advantage but FDU would tie the match at 2-2 after rallying for a three-set win at No. 4 singles. 

Needing two of the final three flights to take the match, Sofia Pinedo and Paula Menendez Alvarez instead won two flights back-to-back at No. 2 and 5 to clinch the victory.

The six-match winning streak is the Highlanders' longest since they rattled off six straight to open the 2018-19 spring campaign from January 25 to February 15, 2019.

NJIT will host two more matches this weekend - Saturday, February 24 against Binghamton at Noon; and Sunday, February 25 against Wagner at 4 p.m.
