UMBC Scores Two Late Goals to Secure Win in Regular Season Finale

Highlanders will be the No. 5 seed in the 2024 America East Tournament and visit


BALTIMORE, MD–UMBC scored two late goals to secure a 2-0 win over visiting NJIT in the final regular season match at UMBC Retriever Soccer Complex Tuesday evening.

America East Tournament 

  • With results from earlier in league action, NJIT will make its fifth straight consecutive appearance in the America East Postseason Tournament. 

  • NJIT will be the No. 5 seed and visit No. 4 Bryant.

How It Happened

  • The score was knotted at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes with the Retrievers holding an 8-to-1 overall shots advantage.  Highlander keeper Devin Armstrong grabbed three saves in net.

  • To start the second half, Alvaro Heredia put a shot on goal in the 53rd minute with a right-footed strike from the top of the box, which was saved by UMBC's goalkeeper Emigdio Lopez.

  • Three minutes later, Devin Armstrong made a diving save to his right on a long strike by UMBC's Tyquan Stroud. 

  • UMBC tallied the first goal of the match in the 83rd minute on a left-footed cross into the middle of the field to Joseph Picotto who headed home the Retriever goal to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.

  • The Retrievers doubled its lead in the 88th minute on a goal by Ryan Calheira after getting behind the NJIT defense for a 2-0 lead. 

  • UMBC out-shot NJIT, 15-8 in overall shots (8-1) shots on goal.
