No. 4 Bryant Tops No. 5 NJIT in 2024 America East Quarterfinals


SMITHFIELD, RI–The fifth-seeded NJIT Highlanders saw its 2024 season come to a close after a 4-0 loss in the 2024 America East Quarterfinals to fourth-seeded Bryant Bulldogs Saturday evening at Beirne Stadium.

With the win, Bryant, who scored all four goals in the second half, advances to the America East Semifinals on November 13 at top-seeded New Hampshire.  NJIT concludes the 2024 season with a 6-8-4 overall record.

How It Happened

  • Bryant's Bayot Pitarch left-footed strike in the 27th minute went high over the crossbar.

  • Two minutes later, Pitarch had another opportunity on a header which went wide on a serve from the left side of the field into the box. 

  • Bryant took a free kick in the 42nd minute on a right-footed strike by Jonas Lyshoj but Armstrong made a one bounce save.

  • With two minutes left in the first half, Armstrong came up big again with a one-arm save diving to his left to keep the match scoreless at the half.

  • Bryant broke through in the 48th minute on a goal by Pitarch assisted by Sam White.  White slipped the ball through the NJIT defense, finding Pitarch and putting the Bulldogs ahead, 1-0.

  • Four minutes later, Bryant added an insurance goal on a serve from the left side of the field by Sam White to Pitarch inside the box, who headed home his second goal of the match to give the No. 4 seeded Bryant, 2-0.

  • The Bulldogs added a goal in the 65th and 75th minute for a 4-0 advantage.

  • In the 77th minute, Matt Moran was credited with the Highlanders first shot on goal off a corner kick served into the box by Andrew Araya but Moran's header was saved.

Noteworthy

  • The 2024 season marked the fifth straight appearance for the Highlanders qualifying for the America East Postseason Tournament under ninth-year head coach Fernando Barboto.

  • NJIT finished the season 6-8-4 overall, 2-3-2 in the America East.

  • Andrew Araya and Eric Sadlocha were named to the 2024 America East All-Rookie Team.

  • Devin Armstrong and Sergio Martinez Cubel were selected to the 2024 America East All-Academic team.

  • Martinez Cubel and Sokol Ymeraj shared team-high honors with four goals, one assist for seven points.  Three out of the four goals for both Martinez Cubel and Ymeraj were on successful penalty kicks.
