Newark, N.J. – The NJIT men's tennis team has concluded its fall slate of matches, wrapping up the semester at the ITA Sectionals in Chapel Hill, N.C. this past weekend. Prior to that event, the Highlanders competed at Drexel as well as in the Southland Singles and Doubles Tournament.
At the ITA Sectionals,
Pablo Perez Ramos advanced all the way to the Finals of the consolation bracket. After dropping his opening match to his opponent from South Carolina, Perez Ramos earned a win over Peter Benjamin Privara of Harvard in the opening round of the consolation draw. After advancing to the quarterfinals on a bye, Perez Ramos won in straight sets over his foe from Old Dominion, 6-2, 6-2, to move on to the semifinals. There, he won a tiebreaker over Noa Vukadin of Clemson, 6-4, 1-6 (10-2), to move on to the consolation final, where he would end up falling to Cosme Rolland De Ravel of Old Dominion.
Perez Ramos also had a solid showing at the Southland Individual Championships, which were held in late October. He reached the finals in both the singles and doubles draws, being ranked No. 1 in both brackets. In singles action, Perez Ramos defeated Matthew Armbruster of New Orleans, 6-3, 6-4, before falling to Nathan Favier of Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the championship. Perez Ramos was paired with
Wil Jenkins in the doubles draw, where the pair took down a duo from UT Rio Grande Valley, 6-0, 6-4, to move on to the finals. There, Perez Ramos and Jenkins fought hard but were unable to defeat Harry Fouzas and Tom Berry of Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
The Highlanders also competed at the Drexel Invitation during the first week of November. NJIT's strongest showing of the weekend came on Sunday against Villanova, where the Highlanders earned the doubles point and won five singles matches against the Wildcats.
Tom Sorin competed in the No. 1 slot in singles, winning his match in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
Soma Fukuhara and
Oscar Callo von Platen followed in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively, earning straight set victories.
Juan Diego Argenal and
Sadhista Linga each fought to take home three set wins over their opponents. In doubles, Jenkins and
German Lopez Andujar paired together and earned a win, 6-2, while Callo von Platen and Fukuhara won their match, 6-3.
"This was an intense fall for us," head coach
Marco Matteucci said. "We saw good results from several of our guys. Nejc and Oscar had a good run in doubles at the ITA regionals, and Nejc had a good winning streak this fall. Soma had a lot of good results in doubles with and showed his potential in singles. Pablo competed in all the best tournaments in the ITA, including Finals of the Southland Individuals and concluding with getting to the consolation finals at the ITA sectionals which resembled a 25k professional tournament. Overall a successful fall for our programs."
