Men’s Soccer Gets Back on Track with 2-1 America East Win at Home Over Binghamton

NJIT scores a pair of goals in the second half to earn two points

NEWARK, NJ–
Graduate student Sokol Ymeraj scored a goal and added an assist in the Highlanders 2-1 home victory over visiting Binghamton in America East Conference men's soccer action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

With the victory, NJIT earns two points, improving to 4-5-2 overall, 1-1 in the America East and 3-1-2 at home while Binghamton moves to 6-6-1 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

This is the second straight match in which NJIT scored a pair of goals in the second half (last game vs. Delaware, T, 2-2) on October 1.

How It Happened

  • Senior Asembo Augo took the first shot of the Highlanders in the 18th minute on a tough angle in the lower right corner of the box, saved by the Binghamton keeper.

  • A pair of header shots for the Highlanders came in the 26th and 29th minute from NJIT's Alvaro Heredia and Goncalo Franco, both saved by Binghamton's goalkeeper.

  • After the first 45 minutes, NJIT held a 7-to-4 lead in overall shots led by Augo.

  • NJIT struck first in the 50th minute on a header by Eric Sadlocha for a 1-0 advantage.  Sokol Ymeraj served the ball into the box off a free kick while Raz Amir got the first touch before Sadlocha headed home his first goal as both were credited with the assist.

  • In the 54th minute, NJIT nearly went ahead 2-0 off a flying header into the box by Sebastian Sunol which went high off a serve from the left side of the field from Justin Aguirre-Rosas.

  • NJIT went ahead 2-0 in the 65th minute on a penalty kick by Ymeraj in the 65th minute.

  • Binghamton tallied its first goal of the season in the 83rd minute on a left-footed strike by Alex Balkey to pull within one, 2-1.

Noteworthy

  • The goal for Sadlocha was his first of his young career.

  • Ymeraj's goal was his second in a Highlander uniform and ninth of his collegiate career.

  • Ymeraj was credited with his first assist of the season while Amir picked up his second this season.

  • Goalkeeper Devin Armstrong played the full 90 minutes, making one save to earn the win.

  • NJIT held a 12-8 advantage in overall shots (6-2 SOG) and corner kicks, 6-2.

Next Up
After playing three straight at home, the Highlanders will make its first road trip in the America East and visit Vermont on Sunday, October 13 at 2pm.
