Vermont Scores Two Late Goals to Top Visiting NJIT in America East Action

BURLINGTON, VT–Vermont scored two late goals to top visiting NJIT, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in America East Conference action at Virtue Field.

Vermont, undefeated in their last 11 matches, improved to 7-1-4 overall, 2-0-1 in the America East while NJIT moves to 4-6-2 overall, 1-2-0 in the league.

The Catamounts broke the 0-0 tie in the 75th minute and added an insurance goal in the 85th minute to secure the 2-0 win and pick up three points.

Highlander keeper Devin Armstrong was exceptional in goal this afternoon for NJIT, keeping the Catamounts off the board until late in the second half while stopping a career-best nine saves.

How It Happened

  • NJIT goalkeeper Devin Armstrong made a big save in the 10th minute to deny Vermont's Yaniv Bazini and was cleared by Guy Panzner.

  • Vermont served the ball over the top and Bazini was able to make a run into the box,  getting behind the NJIT defense but could not get his strike on frame in the 14th minute.

  • In the 20th minute, Armstrong made another point blank save, stretching out to keep the score at 0-0 on a shot by Mike Bleeker.

  • A free kick at the top of the box for Vermont in the 44th minute after a handball by the NJIT but the Highlanders keeper Armstrong made a full extension save to keep the score tied at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.

  • The Catamounts held a 9-to-1 advantage in overall shots (3-0 SOG) but it was NJIT's Armstrong who kept the Highlanders in the match, coming up with three huge stops.

  • Another opportunity for Vermont in the 57th minute off a handball just outside the box by the Highlanders, setting up Bazini for the free kick but Armstrong again made a diving save.

  • A header by Sebastian Sunol in the 59th minute was on target but saved by Vermont's Niklas Herceg.

  • A free kick for NJIT late in the second half off a strike by Sergio Martinez Cubel but the shot went wide right in the 69th minute.

  • Armstrong denied Sydney Wathuta point-blank shot in the 75th minute but a minute later Vermont broke the 0-0 tie on a goal by Zach Barrett who was positioned on the back post to give the Catamounts a 1-0 lead.

  • Vermont netted a late insurance goal in the 83rd off a corner kick by Wathuta tucked away by Max Murray for a 2-0 advantage.

  • The Catamounts finished with 20 overall shots (11 SOG) while the Highlanders finished with five overall shots.  Five different Highlanders recorded a shot in the match.

  • Armstrong finished the match with nine saves, a new career-best for the transfer from Akron/Wake Forest.
