Puletz and Szastak Key In Highlanders 4-3 Shootout Win Over SUNY Maritime

10/27/2024 9:00:00 PM

NEWARK, NJ - After a lopsided defeat in Danbury against Western Conn State on Saturday, the Highlanders were looking to rebound against the SUNY Maritime Privateers. They did just that in a tightly contested, back and forth game that they won 4-3 in a shootout. The win is NJIT's 1st win in MCHC play and their 1st win in the conference in a game that was not a forfeit since joining the conference last season. They earned a 1-1 split with the Privateers this season and their MCHC record is now 1-3. The overall ACHA record is now at 2-4.

NJIT scored 1st on the power play with Matthew Francescutto nearly halfway through the opening stanza. Noah Bergen got the only helper on the goal. That would be the only scoring in the period. Maritime would tie the game early in the 2nd period. But, the Highlanders would respond with two late goals in a span of 1:29 from Bergen and Charlie Youse (his 1st career goal as a Highlander) to give them a 3-1 lead after two periods.

The Privateers would battle back in the 3rd to tie the game with a power play and a shorthanded goal. In Overtime, Colby Puletz made a few big saves when NJIT was on a 4-on-3 penalty kill. The game had to be decided in a shootout that went 4 rounds. Both teams scored in the 2nd round (Bergen scoring for NJIT). Szastak scored in the 1st half of the 4th round to give the Highlanders a 2-1 lead in the shootout. Puletz made a game-sealing save to end the shootout and to give the Highlanders the win.
