Rubis Scores Go-Ahead Goal in NJIT’s 2-1 Win Over Drexel to Conclude Non-Conference Action

NEWARK, NJ–Sophomore Jake Rubis scored the go-ahead goal in NJIT's 2-1 win over visiting Drexel to wrap up the 2024 non-conference slate Tuesday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

NJIT picks up its second straight win of the season, moving to .500 (6-6-2 overall) while Drexel, who is ranked No. 62 in the latest NCAA Men's Soccer Division I rankings falls to 7-5-1.

The Highlander goal scorers on the night were: Sokol Ymeraj (30:01) and Jake Rubis (63:37).  Devin Armstrong registered the win in goal, making two saves.

"Jake Rubis brings a lot of energy, he is young but he was the man of the match today.  His energy led to the goal where he pressed high in the attacking third, putting the ball in the back of the net.  I am really happy for him."

How It Happened 

  • NJIT had an opportunity to score in the 24th minute on a shot by Guy Panzner but got under the shot, sailing high.

  • One minute later, Sergio Martinez Cubel's shot with his left foot at the top of the box went wide.

  • A foul in the box in the 31st minute, resulted in a penalty kick for the Highlanders.  Graduate student Sokol Ymeraj tallied the first goal of the match to give NJIT a 1-0 lead.  

  • After the first 45 minutes, both teams combined for six shots each with one shot on goal.  Highlander keeper Devin Armstrong made one save.

  • Jake Rubis nearly doubled the score in the 50th minute on a point blank shot, saved by Raphael Bartell to keep the score, 1-0.

  • Drexel tied the match at 1-1 in the 56th minute on a penalty kick by Dominick Bachstein.

  • Martinez Cubel blasted a long range shot just left of the goal in the 60th minute.

  • Rubis scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute after a giveaway by the Dragons back line to give NJIT a 2-1 lead.

  • A header by Eric Sadlocha nearly gave the Highlanders a 3-1 advantage but Drexel's keeper Bartell made a nice save with his foot.

  • NJIT finished with a 13-10 advantage in overall shots(4-3 SOG) led by Martinez Cubel with three shots.  Sadlocha, Amit Magoz and Rubis each were credited with two shots in the win.

Noteworthy

  • The goal for Ymeraj was his third of the season in a Highlander uniform.

  • The penalty kick by Sokol was the sixth of the season for the Highlanders.

  • The goal for Rubis was his first collegiate goal.

  • The win for NJIT is the program's first-ever in nine tries against Drexel.

  • NJIT improves to 5-1-2 at home inside Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Next Up
NJIT, with three regular season matches left on the schedule, will play two out of the three on the road.  The Highlanders will visit UMass Lowell on October 26 at 6pm.  The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
