NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT women's soccer team kicked off America East play with a 1-1 draw against the UAlbany Great Danes Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

NJIT (3-2-5, 0-0-1 AE) broke through in the 37th minute on a breakaway goal from Briana Andreoli. The second-year forward subbed on in the 26th minute and proceeded to score less than ten minutes later (37'), taking a great lofted through pass from Mikayla Balio, darting by UAlbany's goalkeeper - who was high off her line - and tapping in the score.

Andreoli's goal - her third of the season - moves her into the team lead for 2023 and matches her 2022 total with nine regular season matches to go. Her three goals and two assists (8 pts) also ties her with teammate Gabby Zalot for the team lead in points.

UAlbany (3-4-1, 0-0-1 AE) would answer in the 71st minute with the eventual equalizer, capitalizing on a Highlander foul to score on a free kick to header combination.

Both teams were evenly matched throughout the contest: each side put eight shots on goal, NJIT produced more corners (8-6), and UAlbany took more shots overall (23-19).

Outside of the one goal allowed, Samantha Constantine had an excellent game, matching her career high for saves (7) that she set in the 2022 America East quarterfinals at Maine on October 30, 2022.

OTHER NOTES

The draw extended NJIT's current unbeaten streak against UAlbany to three games. The Highlanders won their first match in the all-time series in overtime on October 24, 2021 in Newark and played the Great Danes level last season in Albany, 1-1.
This is the fourth game of the season where both NJIT and its opponent each took double digit shots and the match ended in a draw.
Andreoli and Kelsey Ramos paced NJIT with four total shots. Three of Ramos' chances were on frame while Andreoli converted the one she put on goal.
Bailey Chant (3 shots), Ciara Adams (3 shots) Maria Nogueira (2), Madison Taibl (1), Riley Jones (1) and Taylor Pape (1) each registered attempts.
NJIT's all-time record in America East openers now sits at 0-1-3 all-time since joining the league before the 2020/Spring 2021 campaign.
