Highlanders Fall to Delaware State in Straight Sets

HEMPSTEAD, NY - The NJIT women's volleyball team opened its 2023 season on Friday at the Hofstra Invitational, falling to Delawre State in straight sets at the David C. Mack Physical Education Center.

The Hornets, who won the MEAC and qualified for the NCAA Tournament a season ago, won all three sets by identical 25-23 scores to hold off the Highlanders.

DSU scored the first five points of the match, but NJIT didn't go down easy as it stormed back to get within a point at 11-10. The Hornets went on another run to go up seven late in the frame, but the Highlanders once again came back and eventually tied things up 23-23 before Delaware State scored the final two points to clinch the set and go ahead 1-0 in the match.

The second set was back-and-forth throughout with neither squad leading by more than two until the Hornets broke a 13-13 tie with five-straight points. Similar to the first set, NJIT was able to fight back and tie the set and 21-21 and took a 22-21 lead. Delaware State answered, however, scoring four of the final points to clinch the frame and take a 2-0 lead.

NJIT stormed out to an 11-4 lead in the third set, but was unable to hold on as the Hornets used an 8-1 run late in the set to storm back. The Highlanders led 23-21, but were unable to close as DSU scored the final four points to earn the victory.

Elley Torres paced the Highlanders with nine kills, while Ines Varela had seven and Sara Siefert chipped in with six in her first collegiate match.
