CSC Women's Academic All-District At-Large Team
NEWARK, NJ–NJIT men's and women's fencing athletes Dominika Pawlowska, Cindy Yang, Paloma Almodovar and Cristian Candescu have been named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Men's and Women's Academic All-District at-large team for Division I, CSC announced Tuesday afternoon.
Pawlowska, Almodovar, Yang and Candescu were four of the eight combined men's and women's at-large selections NJIT produced - two in men's volleyball and two in men's lacrosse.
The 2023 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 21 (men) and June 22 (women). The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed at the links above.
Pawlowska, from Zielona Góra, Poland, was a member of the epee squad. She posted a 3.664 GPA while majoring in business.
This season, Pawlowska Made her third straight trip to Nationals (2023, 2022, 2021), finishing 20th in the women's epee competition. She placed fifth in the women's epee competition at the 2023 NCAA Regionals on March 11. For the season, she combined for a 99-12 overall record for a 89.19 winning percentage.
Almodovar, from Madrid, Spain, was a member of the foil squad. She graduated Magna Cum Laude-May 22 with a BS in Mathematical Sciences with a minor in Computer Science and recently graduated with a MS program Data Science and Statistics Track with a 3.786 GPA.
This season, Almodovar was seeded No. 19 at the 2023 NCAA Fencing Mid-Atlantic/South Regional hosted by Lafayette College, finishing 16th in the women's foil competition. She registered a 72-43 this season with a 62.61 winning percentage.
Yang, from Lafayette, LA, was a member of the saber squad. She posted a 3.750 GPA while majoring in biomedical engineering.
This season, Yang registered 11 victories in women's saber competition.
Candescu, from Metuchen, NJ, was a member of the men's foil squad. He posted a 3.755 GPA while majoring in computer science.
This season, Candescu made his second trip to Nationals (2023, 2021), placing 17th in the men's foil competition. He registered a 12th place finish at the 2023 NCAA Regionals on March 11 in the men's foil competition. A member of the men's foil squad at the 2023 MACFA Championships, the Highlanders earned a third-place team finish. Candescu combined for a 84-38 overall mark for a 68.85 winning percentage.
