BALTIMORE, MD - The NJIT baseball team was defeated 14-3 by host UMBC in America East action on Sunday at Alumni Field.
UMBC's win gave the Retreivers the series victory as the teams split the first two games of the series. The hosts won 2-0 on Friday evening, while NJIT was victorious 4-1 on Saturday.
The Retrievers set the tone early with a pair of runs in the first inning and after a scoreless second, UMBC scored three times in each of the third and fourth innings to take a comfortable 8-0 lead.
NJIT was able to get on the scoreboard in the sixth, scoring three runs, but UMBC answered immediately with a three-run bottom of the sixth to go back in front by eight again. The hosts added three more runs in the seventh to make the final score 14-3.
The Highlanders were led offensively by
Cole Fleming, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. The double came in the three-run sixth and scored
Andrew Elcock and
Ty Sallie.
Elcock walked three times on Sunday, while Sallie reached by twice via a free pass.
NJIT will look to bounce back this week with a pair of midweek against at in-state foes. The Highlanders will take on Rider on Tuesday and Seton Hall on Wednesday before making the trip to LIU for three games next weekend.
