BALTIMORE, MD - The NJIT baseball team was defeated 2-0 by host UMBC on Friday evening at Alumni Field.
UMBC's Luke Johnson out-dualed NJIT's
Ryan Fischer on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout while striking out 10 Highlanders. Fischer was the hard-luck loser for NJIT, pitching seven innings and allowing a pair of runs on a two-out double in the sixth innings.Â
Johnson allowed just three hits, two of which came from
Brett Helmkamp, while
Kevin Putsky had the third in the ninth inning.Â
Fischer was relieved by
Grant Vurpillat, who pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth inning to improve his scoreless inning streak to seven.Â
NJIT and UMBC will meet on Saturday for game two of the three-game series at 3pm back at Alumni Stadium.
