Five Highlanders Earn 2023 USFCA Mid-Atlantic/South All-Region Honors

NEWARK, NJ–
The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) has announced the 2023 NCAA Fencing Mid-Atlantic/South All-Region teams, which was released by the organization on Monday.

These awards are determined based on result and field size at each of the NCAA Regional Competitions. 

The five Highlanders named to the All-Region Team: Dominika Pawlowska (Second Team; Women's Epee), Niels Roubailo (Honorable Mention; Men's Epee), Kevin Katayama (Honorable Mention; Men's Foil), Cristian Candescu (Honorable Mention; Men's Foil) and Justin Petway (Second Team; Men's Saber).

Dominika Pawlowska (Second Team; Women's Epee)
Pawlowska, a senior from Zielona Gora, Poland made her third straight trip to Nationals (2023, 2022, 2021), finishing 20th in the women's epee competition. She placed fifth in the women's epee competition at the 2023 NCAA Regionals on March 11.  For the season, she combined for a 99-12 overall record for a 89.19 winning percentage.

Justin Petway (Second Team; Men's Saber)
Petway, a graduate student from Plainfield, NJ, made his second trip to Nationals (2023, 2021), finishing in 24th place in the men's saber competition.  This season, he placed seventh in the men's saber competition at the 2023 NCAA Regionals on March 11. A member of the men's saber squad which picked up a third-place team finish at the 2023 MACFA Championships. Petway combined for a 21-6 overall record for a 77.8 winning percentage.

Niels Roubailo (Honorable Mention; Men's Epee)
Roubailo, a freshman from Walchwil, Switzerland, combined for a 12th place finish in the men's epee competition at the 2023 NCAA Fencing Mid-Atlantic/South Regional hosted by Lafayette College.  Roubailo earned a second-place finish in the men's epee competition and was a member of the epee squad which took first place at the MACFA Championships. He went 73-32 overall with a 69.52 winning percentage. 

Kevin Katayama (Honorable Mention; Men's Foil)
Katayama, a senior from Oakhurst, NJ, made his second straight trip to Nationals (2023, 2022), finishing in 20th place in the men's foil competition.  This season, he recorded a ninth place finish at the 2023 NCAA Regionals on March 11 in the men's foil competition.  A member of the men's foil squad at the 2023 MACFA Championships, the Highlanders earned a third-place team finish.  Katayama combined for a 60-20 overall record with a 75.00 winning percentage.

Cristian Candescu (Honorable Mention; Men's Foil)
Candescu, a senior from Metuchen, NJ, made his second trip to Nationals (2023, 2021), placing 17th in the men's foil competition. This season, Candescu registered a 12th place finish at the 2023 NCAA Regionals on March 11 in the men's foil competition.  A member of the men's foil squad at the 2023 MACFA Championships, the Highlanders earned a third-place team finish. Candescu combined for a 84-38 overall mark for a 68.85 winning percentage.
