Men's Lacrosse Battles In Tough Defeat To UMBC

NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT men's lacrosse team hung tough with its latest matchup but were unable to pick up the victory in a 12-10 America East defeat against the UMBC Retrievers Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

HIGHLIGHTS
1ST QUARTER
  • Bowie connected with Hone at the 10:12 mark to tie the match at 1-1 but the Highlanders found themselves down 5-1 by the end of the half after the Retrievers closed the period on a 4-0 run. 

2ND QUARTER
  • UMBC scored two of the first three goals of the second to takes its largest lead of the game (7-2) with 6:14 left in the half but NJIT mirrored the Retrievers on the back end with two-of-three goals to close the half (Willson from Wasitowski at 4:04 and Corry with 53 seconds left) to keep the deficit at four (8-4) at the half.

3RD QUARTER
  • Less than a minute and a half into the second half, an unassisted Bowie score brought UMBC's lead down to 8-5 (13:31). UMBC would push back ahead by four, 9-5 with a goal at the 11:09, but a flurry of goals were on the way for the Highlanders that would change the complexion of the game.
  • Corry would score his second goal with 10:27 on the clock and spark a three-goal surge over 41 seconds that moved the Highlanders from down three to behind by just one goal (9-8) for the first time since the midpoint of the first quarter. Solo strikes from Vanzomeren (10:13) and Muscatella (9:46) followed Corry's in the exciting sequence.
  • The NJIT defense complemented the Highlanders' newfound firepower by keeping the Retrievers scoreless over the final 11 minutes of the period.

4TH QUARTER
  • The shutout stretch for the Highlanders continued for the first two minutes of the fourth before UMBC scored their tenth goal and went ahead 10-8 with 12:57 remaining in the contest. 
  • Labartino's goal off a Ryan Sininsky assist brought NJIT back within one (10-9, 10:58) and Corry tied the game for the first time since the first (10-10) with the help of Wasitowski with 7:16 to go.
  • However, the Highlanders could not replicate its shutout efforts from the third as UMBC would score about a minute later and add an insurance goal near the end.

OTHER NOTES
  • Corry's hat trick was the third of the season and sixth of his career.
  • Today was the second game this year that Wasitowski recorded multiple assists (none in two previous seasons).
  • Saturday's game was NJIT's cleanest of the year in terms of penalties - the Highlanders were only called for one infraction and there were only three flags thrown between the two teams.
  • Brown's 179 saves place him second all-time at NJIT, passing the 178 stops Nick Marzullo made in 2016.
