Women's Tennis Caps Senior Day With 5-2 Win Over Hofstra

NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT women's tennis team snapped their four-match losing streak and celebrated Senior Day for grad Joleta Budiman with a 5-2 home victory over the Hofstra Pride Saturday evening at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

After conceding the doubles point on a 2-1 advantage, NJIT (7-7) seized control of the match by earning the first three points of the singles flights on straight set wins from Budiman (No. 3) and Shivani Ingle (No. 1) and a three-setter from Laura Wipfli (No. 2).

Hofstra (2-10) made it a one-point match after winning at No. 4 singles but Irene Cocero clinched the win in two at No. 5 and Paula Menendez Alvarez set the final score with a win at No. 6.

OTHER NOTES
  • Budiman and Menendez Alvarez's wins were especially impressive their respective comebacks from 5-0 down in the first sets of their flights
  • Menendez Alvarez has been on a hot streak as of late: she has won five of her last six singles matches and had won four in a row before Friday's loss at Temple.

NJIT will close out its busy weekend with a road match on Sunday, April 2 at Binghamton. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
