Eighteen Highlanders to Compete at 2023 NCAA Regional Fencing Championships

Lafayette will host the 2023 NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on Saturday, March 11 at 8am

NEWARK, NJ–Eighteen Highlanders will compete at the 2023 NCAA Fencing Mid-Atlantic/South Regional hosted by Lafayette College on Saturday, March 11 at 8am and will be held at Kirby Sports Center.

NJIT will have three Highlander men represented in the foil competition: Kevin Katayama (seeded No. 6), Cristian Candescu (seeded No. 9), Josh Schaefer (seeded No. 29). Robert Rountree (Alternate - 2) who met the qualification was not seeded in the top 36.

The NJIT women will have two Highlanders represented in the foil competition: Paloma Almodovar (seeded No. 19) and Elena Fernandez Negron (seeded No. 36).

In the men's epee competition, four Highlanders will be represented: Niels Roubailo (seeded No. 9), Robert Hondor (seeded No. 10), Daniel Jeun (seeded No. 24) and Matthew Choi (seeded No. 36).

Three Highlander women will be represented in the epee competition: Dominika Pawlowska (seeded No. 2), Paula Zugasti (seeded No. 15) and Gala Krsmanovic (seeded No. 31).

In the saber competition, three Highlander men will be represented: Justin Petway (seeded No. 17), Christopher Cortez (seeded No. 32) and Jayson Zelaya (seeded No. 35).

Three Highlander women will be represented in the saber competition: Dorottya Berczy (seeded No. 18), Cassandra Sehic (seeded No. 22) and Janine Bacchus-Joseph (seeded No. 36). 

Sherlyn Arzola Silva (Foil; Alternate - 5), Caitlyn Mei Roxas (Foil; Alternate - 10) and Margaret Meschia (Epee; Alternate - 4) met the qualifications but were not seeded in the top 36.

Drew, Duke, Fairleigh Dickinson, Haverford, Lafayette, Johns Hopkins, NJIT, Penn State, Princeton, Stevens, Temple, North Carolina, Penn and Wagner

Schedule
Kirby Sports Center will open to the public at 8 a.m. with competition beginning at 9 a.m. and estimated completion at 5:30 p.m. Foil and epee will start at 9 a.m. with quarterfinals at 10:30, a break at 12 p.m., semifinals at 1 p.m. and finals at 3 p.m. Men's saber will start at 9 a.m. with a break at 10 a.m., quarterfinals at 11 a.m., semifinals at 2 p.m. and finals at 3:30 p.m. Women's saber starts at 10 a.m. with a break at 12 p.m., quarterfinals at 1 p.m., semifinals at 2 p.m. and finals at 3:30 p.m.

NCAA Championships
The NCAA Championships are set for March 23-26 at Duke University. NCAA Championship qualifiers will be announced on Tuesday, March 14.
