Thibodaux, LA - The NJIT men's tennis team fell 4-3 to host Nicholls on Thursday at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
The Highlanders are now 12-3 on the season, while Nicholls saw its record improve to 6-7.
"Today's loss was on us, nothing else," explained Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "For the first time this season, we let our minds, discipline, and maturity get the best of us starting in doubles and then carrying into singles play."
The Colonel jumped in front 1-0 thanks to a pair of wins in doubles play to earn the first point of the match. The Highlanders lone win in doubles play was a decisive one, as
Nejc Skorjanc and
Amine El Kholti rolled to a 6-1 victory at the number two slot.
In singles play, the teams split the six matches with NJIT earning victories at #1, #4, and #6.
Pablo Perez Ramos and
Pavel Petrov both earned wins for the second-straight day at #1 and #6, respectively, while
Wil Jenkins was able to get back into the win column at #4.
"Pablo, Pavel, and Wil kept us going, but it was too late to get the fourth point we needed at the end," added Matteucci. "This has to serve us as motivation to go back to work for the next four weeks to prepare for the conference tournament."
The Highlanders will return to the court on Saturday, March 25, when they host Georgetown. First serve is slated for 11am against the Hoyas in the Naimoli Tennis Center.
