COLUMBIA, MO - The NJIT team baseball team led late on Sunday against Missouri, but the Tigers rallied with three runs in the eighth to win the game 5-3 and clinch the three-game series at Taylor Field.
NJIT is now 5-8 on the season, while Missouri's record now stands at 13-3. The team's split Friday's doubleheader, with the Highlanders game two win marking their first-ever over an SEC opponent.
Joe Georgini gave NJIT a quality start for the second straight Sunday, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs. The Graduate student held the Tigers off the scoreboard for the first four innings, before they were able to get a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 2-0.
The Highlanders scored their first run of the game in the seventh when
Andrew Eppinger doubled home
Ty Sallie to cut the lead to 2-1.
Jared Donnelly, who's two-run home run was the difference in Friday's 2-1 NJIT win, struck again in the eighth, putting the Highlanders in front with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right centerfield wall that scored
Ray Ortiz.
The Tigers answered immediately, however, taking advantage of an NJIT error in the home half of the eighth to score a pair of runs. Missouri added a third run later in the innings and sent the Highlanders down in order in the ninth to clinch the series win.
Sunday's game was NJIT's 10th in a row against Power Five opponents and the Highlanders finished the stretch with a 3-7 record that included a pair of games where they lost the lead in either the eighth or ninth inning.
NJIT will look to get back into the win column on Friday when they travel to VCU to open up a three-game series. First pitch of Friday's game is slated for 3pm in Richmond.Â
