LOWELL, MA - The NJIT men's basketball team was defeated 90-61 by host UMass Lowell in America East Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Athletic Center.
Souleymane DIakite opened up the scoring, while
Adam Hess and
Mekhi Gray followed with buckets of their own to put the Highlanders ahead 6-0, but it was all UMass Lowell after that.
The Riverhawks answered the 6-0 run with 11-straight points before a 12-0 run later in the half gave the hosts 28-13 advantage to break the game open.
A UMass Lowell free throw seconds before half time made the score 41-25 as the teams headed to their locker rooms for the break.
In the second half, the River Hawks had another double-digit scoring run, this time 13-0, to put the game out of reach.
UML extended its lead to a game-high 33 late in the half, before ultimately winning by the 31-point margin.
Adam Hess was the Highlanders' leading scorer on Saturday, scoring 11 points. Hess entered the game as the America East leader in three-point field goal percentage and was 1-for-2 from deep against UML.
Raheim Sullivan scored nine for NJIT, while
Paul McMillan IV chipped in with eight and
Souleymane Diakite finished with seven.
Da'mir Faison and
Keeshawn Mason each scored six for the Highlanders. Mason's six points was a new season high.
Kevin Osawe pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with five points.
UML had four players in double figures, led by Max Brooks and Everette Hammon, who finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
The River Hawks improved to 13-0 at home this season after the win.
NJIT returns to action on Wednesday when it hits the road once again, this time taking on UMBC in another America East contest. Tip-off is slated for 7pm in Baltimore. Earlier this season, the Highlanders knocked off the Retrievers 69-65 in Newark.
