NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by visiting Monmouth University on Wednesday evening in non-conference action on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
Molly Saylor added to her remarkable career as a Highlander in the loss as the redshirt senior goalkeeper made nine saves to reach the 300 career save milestone and keep NJIT in the game as it was out-shot 21-3 overall and 10-2 in shots on goal.
"They're a real good team," explained seventh-year NJIT Head Coach
Ally Nick. "But I'm proud of our team, even though they took a lot of shots our goal was to make their shots predictable and I think we did that."
Monmouth scored in the 10th minute to go ahead as Summer Reimet's shot was blocked and deflected right to A'Liah Moore, who kicked it past Saylor to put the visitors ahead 1-0 early.
NJIT had its best chance to tie the game less than three minutes later when
Caroline Caputo fired a shot on goal from the center of the box, but the Hawks' Cassandra Coster was able to make the save and keep the visitors in front.
Monmouth doubled its lead in the 71st minute on a set piece as Ava Allen headed in a corner kick off the foot of Lauren Karabin and the 2-0 score held as the Hawks improved to 6-1 on the season, while NJIT enters America East play with a 2-3-4 record.
"We have to keep our tempo up, which we did today for the majority of the game, but we need to focus on doing it for the full game," concluded Nick.
The Highlanders return to action on Sunday when they make the trip to Maine for their America East opener. Kickoff is set for 1pm in Orono.
