Four Highlander Programs Highlighted by NCAA for Academic Progress

Four programs post perfect academic progress rate scores

6/15/2022 11:31:00 AM

NEWARK, NJ–Four Highlander programs have been recognized by the NCAA for perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the 2020-21 academic year.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation of all student-athletes on scholarship, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Four Highlander sport programs – women's basketball, women's cross country and men's and women's fencing programs earned a perfect multi-year mark of 1000.  The four teams gaining recognition are the most by NJIT Athletics and are being recognized for the first time in program history.

Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.

The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success.

The NCAA resumed its public release of APR this year after a one-year hiatus. For a complete view of the entire NCAA database, click here.
