STONY BROOK, NY - The NJIT baseball team was defeated in its regular season finale on Saturday, falling 6-5 in 10 innings to host Stony Brook in the final game of a three-game series at Joe Nathan Field.
NJIT scored the first five runs of the game, but the Seawolves scored five times in the sixth inning to tie things up.
The Highlanders scored four runs in the third, thanks to a pair of home runs by
Nick Hussey and
Albert Choi. Hussey led the inning off with a solo shot, before Choi hit a three-run home run later in the inning.
NJIT added a run an inning later when
Jared Donnelly singled home Hussey.
Aidan Kidd started for the Highlanders and tossed five scoreless innings before the NJIT bullpen ran into trouble in the sixth.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th when the Seawolves were able to plate the winning run.Â
Kidd struck out three, while
Grant Vurpillat struck out four over 3.1 innings out of the bullpen.Â
Choi, Donnelly, and
David Marcano each had a pair of hits to pace the NJIT offense. Marcano's second hit was his 69th of the season, which is a new program record.Â
Both Marcano and Choi stole a pair of bases in Saturday's game and now sit one and two in the program's career stolen bases category. Choi is up to 55 for his career, while Marcano sits one back with 54.Â
The Highlanders will return to action on Wednesday when they open up play at the 2022 #AEBASE Championships, which are being hosted by Maine. NJIT is the three seed and will play #6 Hartford on Wednesday at 2:30pm in Orono.Â
