LORETTO, PA–Saint Francis U Nathan Zini registered a match-best 22 kills as the Red Flash rallied for a 3-2 comeback victory over visiting NJIT in EIVA Conference men's volleyball action inside DeGol Arena Friday evening.
The Red Flash improved to a 14-11 overall mark, an even 7-7 in the EIVA while the Highlanders, who entered the match on a two-game win streak moved to 13-9 overall, 8-5 in the EIVA. After Friday's EIVA contests, the Highlanders have clinched a spot in the 2022 EIVA Conference Tournament which will be played at Penn State on April 20-23. Seeds have yet to be determined.
NJIT started off hot, going up 2-0 with wins in the first and second set, 25-20 and 26-24. The Red Flash responded with wins in the third, fourth and fifth and deciding frames 25-18, 25-16 and 15-8 to secure the 3-2 come from behind victory.
In addition to Zini's 22 kills, Blake Liprando combined for 16 kills. Joshua Blair recorded a .667 clip, adding eight kills on 12 attempts with no errors. Setter Ryan Parker piled up a match-best 48 assists while Andrew Deardorff led the match with 10 digs.
Zini paced the match with four aces as the Red Flash held a 8-to-3 advantage.
NJIT had two players reach double-digit kills — Jens Feldthus (11) and Alessandro Negri (10). Middle Martin de Chavarria combined for a .778 hitting percentage, posting seven kills on nine swings with no errors.
De Chavarria and Julian Meissner each posted four block assists in the loss for NJIT.
NJIT will have a quick turnaround and visit No. 2/3 Penn State on Saturday at 7pm. The match will be streamed on B1G+ ($$$).
