NEWARK, N.J. — NJIT men's swimming and diving sophomore
Ian Horstkamp-Vinekar has been named one of six America East Winter Scholar Athletes, the conference announced Thursday afternoon.
Horstkamp-Vinekar, a Cumberland, R.I. native and Chemical Engineering major, is a three-time Dean's List honoree and posted the highest GPA on the 2022 AE Men's Swimming and Diving All-Academic team with a perfect 4.0. The 2021 America East Men's Most Outstanding Rookie of the Meet, Horstkamp-Vinekar earned five medals (2 individual, 3 relay) at the 2022 America East Championships, including a gold in the 100 back with a meet record time of 48.52 - a record previously held by former Olympian and UMBC swimmer Mohamed Hussein.
Horstkamp-Vinekar also posted the top finish at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships, an eighth place swim in the 200 Fly that also set a new school record
Overall, Horstkamp-Vinekar set six of his seven current school records this season.
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the winter season including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming & diving and men's and women's indoor track & field. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a projected starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.
Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
