Vurpillat Tosses Six Scoreless Innings, But NJIT Falls 3-1 to Binghamton

Highlanders Return to Action Wednesday at Princeton

UNION, NJ - The NJIT baseball team fell on Sunday, losing 3-1 to Binghamton in the finale of a three-game America East series at Jim Hynes Stadium.

The Highlanders (16-18, 10-8 AE) scored first as they did in each of the first two games of the series, but Binghamton (13-21, 9-9 AE) was able to come from behind, just as they were able to do so on Friday and Saturday.

NJIT's run came in the third inning when Albert Choi was hit by a pitch with the bases to score David Marcano.

Binghamton answered immediately, however, as Connor Aoki led off the fourth inning with a home run to tie the game. The Bearcats scored two more runs in the inning on a bases loaded single off the bat of Devan Bane.

Grant Vurpillat came into the game with no outs in the fourth and went the duration of the contest, scattering six hits while not allowing another run.

NJIT appeared to get within a run in the seventh when Luke Longo hit a fly ball to centerfield with one out, but Andrew Elcock was ruled to have left third base early and was called out to end the inning.

The Highlanders had runners at second and third with one out in the eighth, but Binghamton closer Jack Collins entered the game and was able to get a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

Collins sent the Highlanders down in order in the ninth to secure his sixth save of the season and give Binghamton the series sweep.

Isiah Daubon went 3-for-5 for his first three-hit game as a Highlander to pace the NJIT offense.

The Highlanders will look to end their five-game losing skid on Wednesday when they travel to Princeton for a non-conference matchup against the Tigers. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
