UNION, NJ - Luke Longo hit two home runs and
Jared Donnelly hit one of his own to ignite a ninth-inning rally, but the NJIT baseball team ultimately fell short, falling 7-5 to Binghamton in the first contest of a three-game America East Conference series this weekend at Jim Hynes Stadium.
The Highlanders (16-16, 10-6 AE) trailed 7-4 entering the bottom of the ninth when Donnelly lead off the inning with a home run to make the score 7-5.
David Marcano then doubled to centerfield and
Julio Marcano was hit by a pitch to put the tying runner on base. The Marcano twins stole second and third with one out, but were unable to score as Binghamton (11-21, 7-9 AE) held on to earn the win.
NJIT got on the scoreboard first when
Luke Longo crushed a three run home run in the bottom fo the first inning to score
Julio Marcano and
Albert Choi.
Binghamton answered with a three-run home run of its own in the third to tie the game and went ahead 4-3 on a RBI groundout in the sixth. The Highlanders answered immediately, however, with Longo hitting his second home run of the game in the home half of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.
The Bearcats had a runner on second with two outs in the eighth when
David Marcano appeared to keep the game tied with a diving play up the middle from his shortstop position. Marcano's throw got past first baseman
Nick Hussey and the Binghamton runner was able to come around to score and give the Bearcats a 5-4 advantage thanks to the unearned run. Binghamton plated two more runs in the ninth without a hit to make it 7-4 heading into the aforementioned bottom of the ninth.
Ryan Fischer started for NJIT and struck out five over six innings of work. He was relieved by
Evan Gegeckas, who had four strikeouts of his own in 2.2 innings.
Alex DiBona came into the game with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and was able to get a flyout to get the Highlanders out of the inning.
Julio Marcano,
Isiah Daubon, and Longo each finished with two hits for the Highlanders.
Albert Choi continued his impressive career as the NJIT centerfielder, making a highlight reel catch as he dove into the wall in the fifth inning to rob Binghamton of a double.
The Highlanders and Bearcats will return to Jim Hynes Stadium on Saturday for game two of the series. First pitch is slated for 1pm.
