Men’s Fencing Sends Nine to Represent NJIT at 2022 NCAA Regionals

Results

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's fencing team will have nine fencers representing NJIT at the 2022 Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Fencing Championships to be hosted by Princeton University on Saturday, March 12, 2022.

There was no regional round in 2021 due to the pandemic and in the last regional held in 2020, the NJIT men sent 12 fencers.

NJIT will have four Highlanders represented in the foil competition - Cristian Candescu, Thomas Manley, Kevin Katayama and Josh Schaefer.

Candescu
–Seeded No. 11
–2022 MACFA Conference Individual Foil Champion (second consecutive season; 2020)
–Member of the foil squad that earned gold at the 2022 MACFA Championships
–61-28 overall; 69% winning percentage 

Manley
–Seeded No. 14
–Placed third at the MACFA Championships
–Member of the foil squad that earned gold at the 2022 MACFA Championships
–47-25 overall; 65% winning percentage

Katayama
–Seeded No. 18
–Placed eighth at the MACFA Championships
–49-22 overall; 69% winning percentage 
–Member of the foil squad that earned gold at the 2022 MACFA Championships

Schaefer
–Seeded No. 36
–First year member of the NJIT men's fencing team
–23-44 overall; 44% winning percentage 

A total of four Highlanders will be represented in the epee competition - Rourke Hillyer, Brett Bogert, Robert Hondor and Guido Liwski.

Pedro D'Avila will be the lone Highlander competing in the saber competition.

Regional teams
Drew, Duke, FDU (women), Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, NJIT, North Carolina, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Stevens, Temple (women) and Wagner (women).

Schedule
Jadwin Gym will open to the public at 8 a.m. with competition beginning at 9 a.m. and estimated completion at 5:30 p.m. Foil and épée will start at 9 a.m. with quarterfinals at 10:30, a break at 12 p.m., semifinals at 1 and finals at 2:30. Women's saber will start at 10 a.m. with a break at 11, quarterfinals at 1 p.m., semifinals at 2, and finals at 3. Men's saber starts at 11 a.m. with a break at 12 p.m., quarterfinals at 1, semifinals at 2 and finals at 3.

Parking
Lot 21, which is outside Jadwin Gym, and Lot 39, which is near the Princeton Boathouse.

Tickets
The event is free to the public. All guests age five and above must be fully vaccinated and present a vaccination card and ID at the door to gain entry. Children under the age of 5 do not require a vaccination card. A mask must be worn at all times.

NCAA Championships
The NCAA Championships are set for March 24-27 at Notre Dame. The Mid-Atlantic/South region has seven spots allocated in every weapon except for men's épée, where it has six. All six weapons have two national at-large spots each. Qualification to the NCAA Championships will be based 40 percent on regular-season results and 60 percent on finish at the NCAA regional.
