POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The NJIT men's tennis team won its third-straight match, defeating host Marist 4-3.
The victory was the third in five days for the Highlanders (6-4), who also defeated FDU on Wednesday and Navy on Saturday. Marist is now 1-5 on the season.
"I am very happy we could keep our winning streak going," said first-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci.
The Highlanders went ahead 1-0 by earning the doubles points thanks to victories at first doubles and third doubles by the tandems of Amine El Kholt and
Samuel Townes and
Abdullah Fouad and Daniel Sabagol, respectively.
Marist took the first three singles matches, but NJIT rallied to win at the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions to extend its winning streak to three.
Oscar Callo von Platen and
Ashwin Kanetkar won in straight sets and fourth and fifth singles, while Townes clinched the match with a three-set victory at sixth singles.
"Kudos to Sam for closing out the match on the first opportunity," added Matteucci. "We played well in doubles and it was good to see this win came from the guys at the bottom half of the lineup."
After playing five matches in an eight day span, the Highlanders will now have a full week off before they return to the court on Monday, March 14, in Texas. NJIT will play UTRGV at 3pm in the first of three matches in Texas next week.
"We will take a few days off to heal the body and get ready for some conference play when we travel to Texas next week," concluded Matteucci.
