EIVA Conference Official Release
NEWARK, NJ–NJIT swept the EIVA Conference Men's Volleyball Weekly Awards as Julian Meissner was selected Offensive Player of the Week and Martin de Chavarria was named Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday.
In a 2-0 week for No. 15 NJIT, the Highlanders picked up a pair of wins over visiting Charleston 3-0 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Meissner, standing 6-foot-7 from Berlin, Germany, averaged 5.63kps combined for a .427 hitting percentage and combined for 12 total blocks, averaging 1.50bps.
On Saturday, Meissner put together an impressive performance in an exciting 3-2 five set victory, registering a career-best 31 kills, which is the highest kill total in program history since 2007 (37 kill; Leonardo Paludo) in a five set match. The 31 kills also ranks tied for second most in the nation in a five-set match. He finished the match hitting .449 with five digs, two aces and two block assists.
In the 3-0 sweep on Friday, Meissner notched 14 kills and posted a .385 hitting percentage with three block assists.
This is the second weekly EIVA award for Meissner in 2022, and third of his career.
De Chavarria, ranked fourth in the nation in blocks per set, averaged 1.50bps (12 total blocks) and 2.38kps while combining for a .563 hitting percentage.
In the Highlanders 3-0 sweep against the Golden Eagles, de Chavarria recorded nine kills with no errors on 13 swings for a .692 hitting percentage while adding seven block assists.
On Saturday, de Chavarria combined for double-digit kills (10) and finished the match with a .474 hitting percentage to go along with four block assists.
This is the second weekly EIVA award for De Chavarria in 2022 and second of his career.
Meissner, De Chavarria and the Highlanders will return to action this weekend with a pair of EIVA Conference road matches at George Mason on March 25 (7pm) and Princeton on March 26 (5pm). Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
