Men's Tennis Beats FDU 4-3

Highlanders Wrap Up Six-Match Homestand on Saturday in Newark

3/2/2022 9:08:00 PM

NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team defeated visiting FDU 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Naimoli Tennis Center.

With the win, NJIT even its record at 4-4 on the season, while the Knights' overall mark now stands at 3-5.

"I'm glad we got through today," said Head Coach Marco Matteucci. "We were definitely not at our best and struggled in many areas. We need to play smarter tennis when we are leading and when the pressure is on us to close."

The Highlanders got on the board first, winning the doubles point thanks to victories at first and third doubles by the tandems of Josh Smith and Oscar Callo von Platen and Abdullah Fouad and Daniel Sabogal, respectively.

Fouad earned a straight-set win at first singles, while Ashwin Kanetkar did the same at fifth singles, before Samuel Townes clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 victory at sixth singles.

The Highlanders return to the court on Saturday when they wrap up their six-match home stand at the Nailmoli Tennis Center vs. Navy. First serve is slated for 11am.

"We have another long weekend ahead of us," concluded Matteucci. "It's another opportunity to learn and get better!"
