No. 15 NJIT Moves Back into the Win Column; Sweeps Charleston in EIVA Action

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's volleyball team moved back into the win column with a 3-0 home victory over visiting Charleston in EIVA Conference men's volleyball action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.

NJIT, ranked No. 15 in the latest AVCA Coaches poll picked up its 10th win of the season, improving to 10-6 on the season and 5-2 in the EIVA.  Charleston moves to 5-10 overall, 2-7 in the league.

The Highlanders won in straight sets Friday evening – 25-19, 26-24 and 25-18.

Junior Julian Meissner led the Highlanders with 14 kills followed by a pair of Highlanders notching nine kills – Martin de Chavarria and Alessandro Negri.  De Chavarria hit an impressive .692 for the match while Negri hit .400.

Setter Roque Nido piled up 41 assists and libero Joe Kennedy paced NJIT defensively with six digs.

In front of the net, NJIT held an 11-to-3 advantage, led by de Chavarria with seven block assists.  Negri added five block assists for the home team.

Charleston was led by Jakub Osiewala's 14 kills and Garret Schnitker with 10.  Diego Villafane and Nathan Avitia split time at the setting position, registering 15 and 14 assists respectively.  Curtain Raines led the match with seven digs.

NJIT got off to a quick start in the first frame, 13-9 on a kill by Julian Meissner and used a 6-1run to extend its lead to 19-10 on a kill by Jens Feldthus.  Charleston rallied back late in the set, cutting the Highlander deficit to five, 24-19, before NJIT put the set away with a kill by Feldthus for a 25-19 victory.

Both teams went back and forth to begin the second set with Charleston taking a 14-12 lead scoring on back-to-back points.  NJIT responded scoring four straight points in the mid-teens for an 18-15 lead.  The Highlanders used a 3-1 spurt to close out the frame capped by an ace from Alessandro Negri for a 26-24 win to go up 2-0.

The Highlanders took control to start the third frame, using a 6-1 spurt to push ahead 14-9 on a left-handed kill by Meissner.  NJIT remained ahead by as many as four for the remainder of the set, closing out the set on a kill by Carson Williams for a 25-18 victory to earn the 3-0 sweep.

The two teams will be back in action on Saturday at 4pm inside the NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
