NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's volleyball team won its third straight match of the season, sweeping visiting LIU, 3-0, behind a team-best 14 kills from freshman Alessandro Negri Friday evening in men's volleyball non-conference action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
NJIT, winners of its last three matches, won in straight sets Friday – 25-19, 25-16 and 25-18, improving to 3-2 on the season while LIU moved to 3-6 on the young season.
In addition to Negri's 14 kills, Martin de Chavarria combined for six kills while Antonio Feliciano and Julian Meissner each added four kills.
The Highlanders, which hit .391 for the match, were led by de Chavarria who hit .556 and Negri at .522. Feliciano recorded a 1.000 hitting percentage with four kills on four attempts.
Setter Roque Nido piled up a match-high 32 assists while the Highlanders as a team held a huge advantage in the service ace category, 8-to-1. Eight different players notched an ace in the win.
In front of the net, de Chavarria and Carson Williams each combined for six total blocks (two solo, four assists) as the Highlanders held a 13-to-4 block advantage. Negri recorded four block assists followed by Nolan Wollmer with three block assists.
For LIU, Hasan Hadzic paced the match with 15 kills, added two digs and three total blocks. Setter Luca Holanda posted 24 assists.
NJIT and LIU will return to action on Saturday at 7pm. The match will be played at a neutral site, Fairleigh Dickinson, in Hackensack, NJ.
