NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team held off visiting St. Joseph's 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Naimoli Tennis Center.
The victory was the second in a row for NJIT, which improved to 3-3 on the season, while St. Joseph's record now stands at 2-2.
"What a hard-fought match," said first-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "I am very proud of the way we are developing, our continuous preparation is beginning to show."
St. Joe's was able to get on the scoreboard first, winning the doubles point to go ahead 1-0.
The Hawks were able to get a victory at first singles, but the Highlanders earned victories at the second, third, fourth, and fifth positions to win the match.
Sophomore
Ashwin Kanetkar clinched the match with a win at fifth singles, defeating his older brother Eshan in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
"It was great to pull off the win, especially after dropping the doubles point," added Matteucci. "Tomorrow is another day at the office and another chance to get better."
The Highlanders will look to make it three in a row on Sunday when they continue their six-match homestand, hosting St. Francis (NY) at 10am back at the Naimoli Tennis Center.
