ORONO, ME - The NJIT men's basketball team suffered a 65-61 setback to host Maine on Sunday afternoon as the Black Bears scored the game's final four points to earn the victory at Memorial Gymnasium.
NJIT drops to 11-14 on the season and 6-9 in America East play, while Maine's record now stands at 6-20 overall and 3-12 in conference play.
The Highlanders got off to a great start going ahead 25-10 less than 10 minutes into the game, but a late first half run from Maine gave the hosts a 36-34 advantage.
NJIT once again came out of the locker room with a big run, and led by nine after a three-pointer from
Miles Coleman made the score 49-40 with 11:50 left in the game.Â
Maine answered again, however, and was able to claw its way back into the game and eventually tied it 57-57 on a dunk from Sam Ihekwoba.
A pair of free throws from
Souleymane Diakite put the Highlanders back in front with 3:47 to play, but Maine scored the next four points and led by a pair with 2:40 on the clock.
Diakite tied things back up with a layup off a field from
Dylan O'Hearn, but that would be it for the NJIT offense.
Maine gota a transition layup from Ihekwoba to go back in front and after a
Miles Coleman three-point attempt went in and out with 14 seconds left, the Black Bears got another layup, this time from Vukasin Masic, to clinch the victory.Â
Coleman led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting in 39 minutes of action. Diakite pulled down a game-high 12 boards to go along with 13 points for his first double-double of the season.
Matt Faw also contributed to the NJIT offense with 14 points.Â
Diakite, O'Hearn, and
Mekhi Gray all played the full 40 minutes on Sunday.
NJIT will return to action on Wednesday when it welcomes New Hampshire to Newark. Tip-off is slated for 7pm at the Wellness and Events Center.Â
