NEWARK, NJ–Visiting Maine outscored the Highlanders 23-4 in the first quarter and was led by a double-double from Maeve Carroll who finished with 20 points 12 rebounds as Maine defeated NJIT, 77-43, Saturday afternoon in America East Conference women's basketball action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
The Black Bears extend its win streak to nine games, improving to 15-10 overall, 12-3 in the America East while the Highlanders, who will look to bounce back into the win column on Monday against UMass Lowell, moves to 13-12 overall, 8-6 in the America East.
The Highlanders currently hold the four seed in the 2022 America East Conference Tournament scheduled for next month with three league games remaining on the schedule – Monday, February 21 vs. UMass Lowell, Wednesday, February 23 at New Hampshire and Saturday, February 26 vs. Hartford. In addition to Carroll's game-best 20 points and 12 rebounds, Alba Orois combined for 18 points and seven assists while Anne Simon, who leads the America East in scoring, added 13 points and six rebounds.
NJIT's Aria Myers and Ellyn Stoll each posted nine points followed by six points from Lyzi Litwinko. Myers finished 3-for-6 from the field while Stoll was perfect from the free throw line, shooting 4-of-4. Kenna Squier chipped in five points, four rebounds and two assists.
Maine led 35-18 heading into the half, leading by as many as 27 in the first half paced by Carroll with 10 points, nine rebounds.
NJIT closed out the final three minutes of the second quarter on a 5-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Aria Myers and a layup from Kenna Squier.
The Highlanders scored the first two buckets of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 14. However, it would be as close as NJIT would get.
