No. 6 Women's Soccer Sees Season End In America East Quarterfinals Against No. 3 Maine

ORONO, ME — The 2022 NJIT women's soccer campaign came to an end on Sunday evening as the No. 6 seeded Highlanders were defeated by the No. 3 seed Maine Black Bears in the quarterfinals of the America East Championship tournament.

NJIT concludes the year with an overall record of 5-8-6 (2-4-2 AE) while Maine improves to 9-2-5 (4-0-4 AE) and will face No. 2 UNH in the America East semifinals.

THE RUNDOWN
  • In a bit of deja vu reminiscent of the regular season finale at Bryant, NJIT found itself down a pair of goals within the first half after Maine struck in the 11th (Emma Donovan from Abby Kraemer) and 24th (Saylor Clark from Emma Donovan) minutes.
  • Maine would take its 2-0 lead into intermission but just like the Bryant game, freshman Briana Andreoli would provide the spark to get the Highlanders on the board.
  • In the 68th minute, Andreoli gathered a long ball pass from redshirt junior transfer Lily Bray, jetted down the right side of the pitch and sent a shot onto goal. Maine keeper Kira Kutzinski got a hand on Andreoli's shot but it bounced behind her and crossed over the goal line as grad Angela Harris was closing in at the far post.
  • The goal tied Andreoli with senior Bailey Chant for the team season lead and once again brought the Highlanders back within one of the host Black Bears.
  • Unfortunately, the change in momentum was short lived as Maine was able to score again 19 seconds later in the 69th minute as Julie Lossius put home a teammate's shot that hit off the crossbar.
  • The Black Bears would score a goal in the 85th minute (Abby Kraemer from Saylor Clark) to set the final margin.
  • In defeat, sophomore Samantha Constantine made a career-high seven saves in over 86 minutes of time before being substituted for Cassidy Landis so the senior could make her final appearance in net for the Highlanders.
OTHER NOTES
  • Andreoli's three-goal season marks the first time a freshman has scored that many in their first campaign since senior Lauren Chamberlain's debut in 2019 (team-lead-tying four goals).
  • 2019 was also one of the last two times that at least three freshmen (Chamberlain, Chant and Nora O'Connor) scored at least one goal. The feat was also accomplished in 2021 (Ciara Adams, Aleesha Deshmukh, Taylor Pape). 2022 exceeded that mark as four first-years contributed on the scoreboard this year: Andreoli, Kelsey Ramos, Riley Jones, Maria Nogueira.
  • Bray's assist made her the third Highlander this year to record multiple assists - Deshmukh (3) and Chamberlain (2) were the others.
  • The Highlanders were able to earn their second straight America East playoff berth - and fourth conference tourney appearance in head coach Ally Nick's seven seasons - despite closing the year without the services of at least six crucial contributors because of varying levels of injury: Madison Taibl, Ariana Caminos, Daniella Vito, Molly Saylor, Caroline Caputo and Deshmukh, who returned to the lineup Sunday after missing the final two regular season games.
  • NJIT's all-time America East postseason honors increased from seven to eight after Ciara Adams was named to the AE All-Championship team among the six participating schools. NJIT has already produced three Second Team selections (Siani Magruder in 2021 & 2022; Molly Saylor in 2021), two All-Rookie picks (Riley Jones in 2022, Caroline Caputo in 2021), a previous All-Championship team member (Siani Magruder in 2021) and an All-Academic honoree (Molly Saylor in 2021).
  • The win by Maine finally gave them a win over NJIT in their four-game all-time series (1-1-2).
  • No. 5 UAlbany upset No. 4 UMass Lowell in Sunday's other quarterfinal and will face No. 1 Binghamton in the semifinals.
