UMass Lowell Takes America East Matchup Against Women's Soccer

NEWARK, N.J. — A pair of second half goals in rapid succession proved to be the undoing for the NJIT women's soccer team in a 2-0 loss to the UMass Lowell River Hawks Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Down several key contributors to injury, NJIT (2-6-5, 0-3-1 AE) played even more to their normal defensive style and went into half knotted at 0-0 for the eighth time in 13 matches this season.
  • While UMass Lowell (5-5-2, 2-1 AE) held an 8-2 shot edge in the first, all three of their on goal attempts were parried away by redshirt senior Molly Saylor without incident.
  • The Highlanders came out in the second with an increased work rate and were able to register their best chance on cage in the 57th minute on a shot from sophomore Aleesha Deshmukh that was saved away.
  • Unfortunately, a pair of back-to-back free kicks on the edge of the box turned out to be the difference in the contest. In the 59th minute, The River Hawks' free kick reached the front of goal and was covered by grad defender Siani Magruder but the ball took an unlucky bounce off Magruder and into net for an own goal and a 1-0 UMass Lowell lead.
  • Just over a minute later, another free kick, taken by UMass Lowell's Calliste Brookshire, was put on goal and Saylor drove correctly and made contact with the ball but slipped underneath her and into the goal.
OTHER NOTES
  • Head Coach Ally Nick lauded the play of freshman reserve Riley Jones during the postgame interview, citing the newcomer's energy in what was the most playing time she has seen this season (59 min).
  • Fellow newcomer Kara Thompson made her first career start in the midfield alongside Deshmukh.
NEXT UP
NJIT will open Homecoming Weekend while concluding non-conference play with a Friday evening matchup (Oct. 7) against Delaware State. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
