NEWARK, DE - The NJIT women's volleyball team hit the road for the first time this season and fell to host Delaware in straight sets on the opening day of the Delaware Invitational, which is being hosted by the Blue Hens on Friday and Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
NJIT's record now stands at 1-1, while Delaware improved to 3-1 on the young season.
The Blue Hens set the tone early, winning the first set 25-11, before taking the second and third sets 25-15 and 25-18, respectively.
NJIT was led by
Adriana Goetz-Morales, who finished with six kills, while
Cami Augustine (three) and
Udo Nwosu (two) also recorded multiple kills.
The Highlanders won the battle at the net, out-blocking Delaware 7-6 as
Ines Varela's four blocks (one solo) and
Kyla Lannert's three blocks led the way. Lannert also dished out a team-high 15 assists on Friday.
Campbell Walker made in NJIT debut, coming off the bench to play the final two sets. The freshman tallied five digs in her first collegiate match.
The Highlanders return to the court on Saturday with a pair of matches back at the Bob Carpenter Center. NJIT will take on Maryland-Eastern Shore at 11am, before wrapping up the weekend against Fordham at 2pm.
