NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT women's volleyball team opened up America East Conference action on Friday against Binghamton and fell just short as the Bearcats were able to win the match in five sets at the Wellness and Events Center.
Binghamton won the opening set 25-19, but NJIT battled back to take the second and third sets by matching 25-20 scores to take a 2-1 lead.
The Bearcats tied the match 2-2 with a 25-18 fourth set victory, and pulled out the final set 15-13 to clinch the victory. Binghamton never trailed in the fifth set and led 14-11, before NJIT closed the gap to 14-13, but was unable to tie the match.
Elley Torres recorded a double-double (team-high 14 kills, 11 digs) to lead the Highlanders, while
Courtney Branch and
Cami Augustine each tallied 10 kills.
Juliana Impaglia handled the setting duties for NJIT and dished out 45 assists.
The Highlanders return to the court next Friday for another America East contest when they travel to Hartford for a 6pm match.
