Women's Soccer Defeated By UMass Lowell In America East Opener

LOWELL, MA --- The NJIT women's soccer team opened America East play Sunday afternoon, falling on the road to the UMass Lowell Riverhawks, 2-1, at Cushing Field.

The contest was a fairly quiet affair for the first 70-plus minutes until a flurry of offense from both NJIT (2-7, 0-1 AE) and UMass Lowell (4-3-1, 1-0 AE) set the game's final margin.

UMass Lowell struck first in the 75th minute as a Riverhawk pass from outside the box got past the NJIT back line and onto the foot of UML's Marissa Saucedo. UMass Lowell added a second goal just over two minutes later (77') on an unassisted score by Ioannna Papatheodorou.

NJIT would answer 35 seconds later (78') to cut the Riverhawks' advantage in half. A right side cross from Christine Conaghy was deflected by UMass Lowell but not completely cleared from the box. Bailey Chant was able to knock the ball down and blast a low shot to the bottom left corner.

The game was inches away from being tied a minute later (79'), but a shot from Caroline Caputo from about 20 yards out hit the middle of the crossbar, bounced down, and was successfully cleared.

Chant led NJIT with both of the Highlanders' shots on goal while Jennifer Callaghan matched Caputo's one shot for NJIT's four total shots.

Molly Saylor played another complete game and swatted away six shots on the afternoon.
