NEWARK, NJ--Camil Azzam Ruiz and Eduardo Calvo-Salinas each scored a pair of goals for Iona in the Gaels 5-2 road victory at NJIT on Tuesday evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. 

Iona's Azzam Ruiz combined for two goals and one assist for five points and Calvo-Salinas recorded two goals and two assists for six points in the victory.  Lenworth Lopez scored a goal and added an assist for the Gaels.

For NJIT, Jose Escandon scored his second goal of the season and graduate student Rene White combined for his 44th career goal, which leads all active NCAA Division I leaders. 

"We didn't show up and play to the best of our ability," head coach Fernando Barboto added postgame.  "We will look to bounce back into the win column on Saturday when we open America East Conference action against UMass Lowell at home in Newark."

Iona got on the board in the third minute on a goal by Azzam Ruiz, assisted by Calvo-Salinas for an early 1-0 lead.  The goal for Azzam Ruiz was his second of the season.

In the 12th minute, freshman Justin Aguirre-Rosas nearly scored the equalizer off a corner kick hitting off the crossbar.

Two minutes later, NJIT had another opportunity, this time from inside the box on a strike by Alejandro Rabell, who cut back and fired off a shot but Iona keeper Zachary Nelson made the save.

Iona went ahead 2-0 in the 19th minute on a free kick just outside the box by Calvo-Salinas, putting away his second goal of the season.

Calvo-Salinas scored his second goal of the match in the 36th minute after he collected the rebound after the initial shot by Azzam Ruiz to give the Gaels a 3-0 advantage.  

NJIT's Jose Escandon got the Highlanders on the board in the 54th minute on a curled strike, which tucked in the right post assisted by Juan Gonzlaez who took the initial shot.

The visitors added to its goal total in the 56th minute on his second goal of the match by Azzam Ruiz, scoring low and to the left of the frame for a 4-1 advantage.  Lenworth Lopez and Christian Geddes were credited with the assist.

In the 58th minute, White tallied his sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick after a result in a handball by the Gaels.  White has scored at least one goal in each of the Highlanders five matches.

Lenworth added a goal for the visitors in the 75th minute off a corner kick by Calvo-Salinas to push Iona's advantage to 5-2.  Calvo-Salinas combined for his second assist of the match to go along with a pair of goals.

NJIT will kick off America East Conference play on September 18, hosting UMass Lowell and the Highlanders three-match homestand will conclude on September 21 against La Salle.  The match against UMass Lowell will kickoff at 6pm on ESPN3.
