Rabell’s Golden Goal Delivers Thrilling America East Victory Over UMass Lowell

NEWARK, NJ--Junior Alejandro Rabell scored a pair of goals, including the golden goal in overtime in NJIT's thrilling 2-1 America East Conference victory at home against UMass Lowell on Saturday at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Rabell scored the golden goal in the 95th minute on a header off a low line drive corner kick by Tomas Jorge to secure the Highlanders first victory in the America East.

NJIT, which snapped a three-game skid, moves back to the win column, registering three points and moving to 2-3-1 overall, 1-0-0 in the America East while UMass Lowell drops to 1-5-1 overall, 0-1-0 in the America East.

Rabell, a 2021 America East Conference second-team honoree, scored his first goal of the season in the 75th minute and second, 10 minutes later, on the game-winner in the 95th minute for the Highlanders.

UMass Lowell struck first in the 72nd minute on a goal by Borna Miklic for a 1-0 lead.  

NJIT got on the board three minutes later, as the NCAA Division I active career leader in goals (44) and points (96) Rene White slipped the ball past three UMass Lowell defender to a running Rabell in the penalty area, who fired a left-footed shot into the goal, knotting the match at 1-1 in the 75th minute.

Junior keeper Samuel Reisgys picked up his second win of the season, stopping five River Hawk shots.

NJIT, which outshot UMass Lowell in the first half, 9-1, finished the match with a 19-7 advantage led by Rabell with five total shots.

The Highlanders will conclude its three-match homestand on Tuesday at 7:30pm, hosting La Salle on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
