Queens, NY - The NJIT men's tennis team dropped its season finale, falling 5-2 to St. John's on Sunday.
The Highlanders conclude their season with a 7-5 record, while the Red Storm improved to an impressive 14-1 mark.
"We played some of our best outdoor tennis today against the defending Big East Champions," said NJIT Head Coach
Ira Miller.Â
The Red Storm won two of three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage in the match.Â
"The third doubles team of
Ashwin Kanetkar and
Adrian Tudor had by far their strongest match of the year to win their match 6-3," added Miller. "Second doubles was up a break early but gave it back only to lose 6-4."
St. John's then took four of the six singles matches to earn the 5-2 victory.
"In the singles there was still a pathway to victory," explained Miller. "
Abdullah Fouad ,
Samuel Townes,
Ashwin Kanetkar, and
Josh Smith all played one very good set, but it was not enough. Amine El Kholti played one of his best matches of the year to win in three and
Ammar Fekry also showed new poised in closing it out at sixth singles.
El Kholti won his match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while Fekry was victorious 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.
"What's most important is that we got better with every match this season which bodes well for next year when we will have everyone back plus two more players who can play at the top," concluded Miller.
