Women's Soccer Ends Season On Senior Day

NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT women's soccer team closed out its 2020 campaign and honored its senior class at home Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The Highlanders' season finale was spoiled by the visiting UAlbany Great Danes, 1-0. NJIT ends the year with a record of 2-6-1 (0-5-1 AE).

NJIT honored its seven graduating seniors - Sophia Barros, Jennifer Callaghan, Christine Conaghy, Nicole Loehle, Yasmeen Malik, Katrina Nguyen-DeMary, and Tara Walenczyk - and graduate student Lizzy Wolfe before the contest.

Despite UAlbany (5-5, 4-2 AE) holding a 21-8 advantage in total shots and Barros getting her first career start in goal, the NJIT defense played well throughout the game and only allowed the game-winning off a deflected free kick shot in the 63rd minute.

Barros was strong in her first-ever game, making five saves while playing all 90 minutes.

The Highlander offense picked up in the second half, recording seven of its eight shots and six of its eight corner kicks in the final 45 minutes. NJIT's best chances to tie the match came towards the closing minutes of the game. Sophomore Madison Taibl took a shot in the 89th minute that UAlbany keeper Sophia Chen was able to save; Nguyen-DeMary missed a late chance; and sophomore Lauren Chamberlain was able to put a shot on goal in the final ten seconds but it bounced off the top right side of the crossbar.
