NEWARK, N.J. —- A back-and-forth battle between two equally matched opponents went the way of the visitors as the NJIT women's soccer team was narrowly defeated by the UMBC Retrievers in overtime, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The final shot total was an even 9-9 but the deciding goal came with a minute to go in the game's first overtime from UMBC's Meghan McKye.

NJIT (2-4-1, 0-3-1 AE) would have had a two shot - and two goal - edge if a pair of headers less than two minutes apart from graduate student Lizzy Wolfe were not waived off for offsides violations.

Wolfe's first chance came in the 50th minute as senior Christine Conaghy's left side cross found her perfectly if not for positioning. The second near score came as junior Siani Magruder placed a pinpoint free kick from over 30 yards out into the box but the Highlanders' celebration was ultimately for naught.

The close calls were part of an overall more aggressive second half for NJIT, who doubled up UMBC (1-2-1, 1-2 AE) on shots (6-3) in the second half.

One of the closest chances from that second half came in the 68th minute off the foot of sophomore Nora O'Connor, who made a dazzling move into the box but saw her right footed attempt bounce off the top crossbar.
