WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team traveled down the Garden State Parkway on Saturday and was defeated host Monmouth 7-0.
The Hawks improved to 5-2 on the season, while NJIT's record now stands at 6-2.Â
"A very tough loss," said Head Coach
Ira Miller. "The match was certainly closer than the score, but we certainly were outplayed today. Playing outside was a real challenge but we'll get better at it.
NJIT played tough in its three doubles matches, but was defeated in all three, losing 6-4, 6-4, and 7-5, respectively.
Monmouth was able to carry the momentum of its close doubles wins into singles play and defeated the Highlanders in straight sets in five of six matches.
Josh Smith was the only NJIT player to win a set, winning the opener 6-4, before dropping each of the next two 6-2.
The Highlanders will look to get back to their winning ways when they return to the court on Friday and host Sacred Heart at a location to be determined.Â
