Baseball Drops Two at Hartford

Highlanders Will Take on UMass Lowell in Another America East Road Series Next Weekend

WEST HARTFORD, CT - The NJIT baseball team dropped both ends of an America East doubleheader to host Hartford on Saturday afternoon at Fiondella Field.

The Hawks (6-2, 6-2 America East) won the opener 5-0, before holding on to take game two 8-6 to complete the sweep of the Highlanders (3-11, 2-6 America East) and clinch the four-game series after the teams split Friday's doubleheader.

Game One
Nathan Florence pitched a complete game (seven inning) shutout for the Hawks, who got some timely hitting to score runs in four different innings.

The Hawks struck first with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, and plated another run in the third innings, this time taking advantage of an NJIT error.

Hartford's lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth inning, before they added an insurance run in the sixth to make the final score 5-0.

NJIT was held to just four hits in the game one loss, getting a double from freshman Andrew Eppinger, and singles from Albert Choi, Andrew Elcock and Daniel Helfgott.

Game Two
The Highlanders got on the scoreboard first by way of a Julio Marcano solo home run in the top of the first inning, but the Hawks answered immediately, tying the score 1-1 in the home half of the inning.

Starting pitcher Jared Kacso was able to hold the Hawks offense off the board again until the fifth inning when they score three runs to take a 4-1 advantage. The Highlanders were able to get one of those runs back in the top of the sixth on an RBI-groundout from Helfgott, but the Hawks scored three more times in the bottom of the inning and led 7-2.

NJIT was able to get within 7-4 mid-way through the eighth inning thanks to an RBI double from Luke Longo in the seventh and another RBI from Helfgott in the eighth, but Hartford once again answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 8-4 heading into the final inning.

Marcano hit his second home run of the game and third of the season in the ninth to cut the margin in half, 8-6, but that would be as close as the Highlanders would get.

Marcano and Kevin Putsky each had two hits to pace the NJIT offense, with both of Marcano's coming via home runs.

Up Next
NJIT travels to UMass Lowell for another four-game America East series next weekend. The teams are slated to play a pair of games on Friday, before wrapping up the series with another doubleheader on Saturday.
