NCAA Championship Results (completed round three)
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA--The NJIT men's fencing team wrapped up the first day of the 2021 NCAA Championship hosted by Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center Thursday, with four of the Highlanders six fencers in the top 10 overall for their respective weapons.
Leading the way for the Highlanders was junior Robert Hondor in the men's epee competition. Hondor was victorious in 10 out of 15 bouts, placing second overall with a .667 winning percentage. Rourke Hillyer won five bouts and sits in 20th place.
The men's foil squad was successful on day one of competition, as both Highlanders, Cristian Candescu and Thomas Manley finished in the top 10. Candescu won 10 of his 15 bouts for a .667 winning percentage, finishing eighth while Manley won nine out of 15 bouts for a .600 winning percentage and sits in 10th place.
Junior Justin Petway registered nine wins out of 15 bouts for a .600 winning percentage in the men's sabre competition and finished day one in eighth place. Joey D'Orazio is currently 22nd with a pair of victories.
The NJIT men's fencers will resume competition Friday morning when rounds four and five begin at 9 a.m. Following rounds four and five, the top four qualifiers from each weapon will compete in their respective semifinals beginning at 1 p.m.
