NEWARK, NJ--Visiting Vermont scored the only goal of the match in the fourth minute and held on to a 1-0 shutout victory over NJIT on Saturday in America East Conference men's soccer action on Homecoming Weekend at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
Vermont picked up its second straight win of the season, improving to 7-3-1 overall, 2-0-1 in the America East while NJIT moves to 3-7-1 overall, 1-3-0 in the America East.
The Catamounts finished the match with a 11-to-4 overall shots advantage while both teams were even in corner kicks, 3-3.
Vermont got on the board early in the fourth minute on a goal by Noah Egan assisted by Joe Morrison for a 1-0 advantage. Egan put away his second career goal on a header catching Highlander keeper Samuel Reisgys out of position after an initial deflection shot by Morrison.
In the 58th minute, Jose Escandon recorded the Highlanders first shot of the match on a left-footed blast which was saved to the bottom center by Nathan Silveria.
A minute later, Vermont nearly went ahead 2-0 on a blast by Nacho Lerech, hitting the right post.
NJIT had a pair of chances in the 63rd and 66th on shots wide and high by Justin Aguirre-Rosas and captain Joao Costa.
With less than 12 minutes left in the match, fifth-year Zach Halma's shot sailed wide.
Vermont's Nathan Silveira posted the shutout, stopping one Highlander shot while Reisgys combined for three saves.
NJIT will conclude its three match homestand on Wednesday, October 13, welcoming Stony Brook to Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
At halftime, NJIT retired Hernan "Chico" Borja's '81 number (#14). Borja, the greatest soccer player in NJIT history, was a prolific scorer and consummate teammate. Chico's post NJIT career included 11 caps with the US Men's National Team, the NY Cosmos and a variety of US professional teams. In January of 2021, Hernan "Chico" Borja passed away at the age of 61.
